Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) Lighting

What is the recommended distance between the bottom of a hanging
light fixture and a table?

When it comes to pendants and chandeliers, this is the first question we need to answer. There can be differing variables for every lighting arrangement. For example, depending on your own height, if you order a fixture with an open shade, how low does the fixture need to hang to keep you from seeing the bulb from a reasonable distance? Could the fixture come in contact with a head? Are you trying to achieve "task lighting" where you might prefer more light directly below the fixture?

We recommend that you start 32" above the table. To help you visualize the proper length, take a string and tape it to the shape of a shade or globe (triangle or circle) made from cardboard, then tack or tape the string to the ceiling where you want the light fixture to hang. Adjust the string to different heights, then leave it there to live with for a while. Watch for vision blocking or positions where a head could come into contact. This will help you determine the right height for your custom fixture.

Which finishes are available?

There are six available finishes to include:
  • Polished and Satin Brass
  • Polished and Satin Nickel
  • Light Darkened Brass (light brown, similar to Antique Brass)
  • Dark Darkened Brass (dark brown, similar to Oil Rubbed Bronze).

You can see examples of these finishes here. We also have copper tubing which can be polished or darkened for mixed finish options.

Do I need to maintain the light fixture?

All of our solid brass fixtures with a polished, satin or darkened brass finish are living finishes. They will develop a warm patina naturally over time. Polished and Satin Nickel finishes will not patina. It is not necessary nor do we recommend that any metal part be washed with any type of liquid cleaner. When cleaning glass, it is best to remove the glass from the fixture as soaps and chemicals can spot tarnish the metal finish. Otherwise, all that may be required is a light dusting with a micro fiber cloth (also available at DECORUM).

What is a "fitter size"?

A "fitter size" is the outside diameter or lip at the opening of a glass shade or globe where it attaches to a light fixture.

Do you have a catalog?

This web site will serve to show you examples of our standard light fixtures. But do keep in mind that we make our lights right here in our own shop. If you prefer a different shade or globe, a different finish, style, length or width...the choices are entirely yours to make as we specialize in making lights that fit your home or project needs.

You can view a complete catalog of the lanterns and chandeliers made by Northeast Lantern by viewing this file: Northeast Lantern 2012 Catalog (7.85 MB). You will need Adobe Reader (free) installed on your computer to view the file.

Do you have examples of your lights installed in your customers homes?

Yes, we have a small gallery of images showing our lighting fixtures as they've been installed in some of our customers homes.

Can I have my ordered items shipped directly to my home?

Yes, we ship via UPS anywhere within the United States and Canada. Otherwise, if you are local, we can call you to pick up your order as soon as it is ready. Due to some shipping size restrictions large fixtures may be delivered with some assembly required.

What are your shipping charges?

Shipping and handling charges vary based on size of the packaging, weight and delivery location. We can provide a close approximate once we know what you want to order. NOTE: Orders delivered to locations within the state of Maine are charged a 5% sales tax on the subtotal. All others are Tax Exempt.

What is your return policy?

For in-stock (e.g. Oceanic/Nautical) fixtures and glass, you have 30 days from the receipt of your order to return it for a refund provided it has no damage and it is in the original box. All custom (made-to-order) fixtures are final sale. It is your responsibility to provide us with the correct measurements at the time of order. We will be glad to alter a fixture at an extra cost if you feel you have measured incorrectly.

There is a one week grace period for custom lighting orders beginning the day the order was placed. Special Ordered hardware (e.g. knobs, pulls, sinks, faucets, etc.) may only be cancelled if we are successful in stopping the order at the supplier/manufacturer. Otherwise, there is a 30% re-stock fee plus the cost of shipping to return these types of orders back to the supplier/manufacturer.
